The Spectacular Bloom of Agave - Agave plants bloom just once in their lifetime, sending up a towering flower stalk after years—sometimes decades—of growth! This rare bloom not only captivates but also provides vital nectar for bees, bats, and hummingbirds. Once the flowering ends, the agave’s life cycle completes, but new “pups” sprout at its base, continuing its legacy.

Meet Drimia Maritima, also known as Red Squill or Sea Squill! This fascinating plant starts its cycle in spring with rosettes of long leaves before entering dormancy for summer. Then, as late summer rolls into fall, it surprises us with towering flower stalks reaching up to 6 feet tall! The best spots to catch a glimpse of these unique blooms are along the Main Trail near the Palm Grove, The Wallace Desert Garden, and the Demonstration Garden. Don’t miss out on nature’s wonders!
