Title: Desert Roses: Women of Pinal County
Description: A desert rose is a beautiful, hard mineral that rises from within the earth to ‘bloom‘ in a harsh environment. This is a good metaphor for the women who came to Pinal County and rose above their circumstance to affect their communities, preserve the histories, and influence generations to come. This presentation presents both the well-known and the unsung women who left their mark on Pinal County. Featured are pioneers, Native American women, authors, educators, women in the military, entrepreneurs and a few criminal women who left their marks as well.

Speaker Bio: Christine Reid is intrigued by Arizona’s diverse and rich western heritage as a writer and researcher with the Pinal County Historical Society and Community Scholar for the Anthem at Merrill Ranch lifelong learning program. She has been with Arizona Speaks traveling the state presenting programs since 2010. Committed to sharing history in a lively manner, she presents the sometimes hidden or forgotten aspects of Arizona’s characters and history.

Flowers may be beautiful, but some, like Datura wrightii, can also be deadly. This flower, also known as Sacred Datura, contains toxic alkaloids that can be fatally poisonous if ingested.
Some insects still benefit from these flowers. Its most frequent pollinator is the hawkmoth. The white petals make the bloom more visible at night so hawkmoths can find and pollinate it more easily.

When you`re on the trails, always keep an eye out for snakes! You never know when one`s going to slither by, and you don`t want to be caught unawares.
This little guy is a Gophersnake! They are Arizona`s longest snake and can be found throughout the state. They`re non-venomous and harmless, so if you see one on the trail keep calm and enjoy observing it from a safe distance!

So... how do mushrooms grow? Unlike plants, they don`t use photosynthesis to get energy. Instead, they absorb nutrients from organic material around them. Because of this, they`re not categorized as a plant OR animal. They are their own special category. Fungi really are something to marvel at.

Our field trip program welcomes school aged kids K-12 to participate in inquiry-based learning adventures. Field trips operate October-April on weekdays. No teaching experience needed! We provide training and shadowing opportunities to learn.

It`s International Vulture Awareness Day! Our ecosystem would be significantly less clean without them, so we really owe Vultures a lot of appreciation! Here`s some fun facts you may not know:
🪶We have two species in Arizona: Black Vultures and Turkey Vultures. Both can be found at Boyce Thompson Arboretum!
🪶Their stomach acid is so strong, it can process anthrax and botulism.
🪶They can smell food up to 1 mile away.
🪶 Groups of vultures have different names depending on what they`re doing: when they`re flying in a circle they are a "kettle", if they`re eating they`re a "wake", and when they`re perched, they`re a "committee", "venue", or "volt."
