Branching Out Speaker Series

Title: The Sonoran Desert: A Global Bee Biodiversity Hotspot
Description: With over 21,000 species globally, bees can be difficult to study, and our taxonomic knowledge concerning them continues to grow. The Tucson Bee
Collaborative works to use DNA sequencing in conjunction with traditional museum collections to establish baselines for bee biodiversity in southern Arizona. So far, nearly 450 bee species have been found in the Tucson Basin alone, and almost 800 for all of southern AZ. Here we’ll discuss the origins of bees, their biogeography, and what makes the Sonoran Desert a top contender for being a global bee diversity hotspot.
Speaker: Tanner Bland (he/him), Program Coordinator for Tucson Bee Collaborative
Speaker Bio: As the program coordinator for the Tucson Bee Collaborative, my job is to enable research, educate the community, and facilitate the curation and identification of nearly 100,000 bee specimens from southern Arizona. I am also a master’s student at the University of Arizona Department of Entomology, where I’m using next-generation sequencing to help us better understand floral relationships for native, solitary bees in southern Arizona. We hope these novel methods will enable museums to answer new ecological questions using contemporary and historical specimen material, and aid in monitoring efforts for at-risk species.

Have you ever seen a shallow depression in the earth and wondered what kind of wildlife may be responsible for it? It`s possible it belongs to a Sonoran Desert Tortoise! 🐢 These little divots are called pallets and are formed by these tortoises as a spot to hang out and cool off, especially during warm, summer months.
If you spot a wild tortoise, always give it and its habitat plenty of space. Only intervene if it`s in immediate danger. Together, we can keep wildlife wild!

We go nuts for jojoba plants!
Did you know that inside each seed is a liquid wax-like substance known as jojoba oil? It`s suprisingly rare to find this in nature, so they`re highly sought after in cosments and industrial lubricants.
Nature always has the most incredible and unexpected uses.

Thinking about pruning your shrubs? Whatever you do, don`t give into the temptation of turning them into spheres!
Shearing a plant into a sphere actually destroys it`s structure. The thick, outer layer of leaves keeps sunlight from reaching the middle, causing the interior to hollow and die. It`ll attract more harmful insects, diseases, and reduce the amount of flowering.
Instead of excessive shearing, prune your shrub to match it`s natural shape. You`ll get a healthier plant with fuller, more beautiful blooms. 🪻

We have a mushroom growing on one of our Eucalyptus trees!
This yellow fungi is likely a Laetiporus gilbertsonii, also known as Chicken of the Woods. If you visit us within the next week or so, you can find it growing on a tree across from Mr. Big in the Eucalyptus Forest. You don`t want to miss it!

One of these eggs is not like the others... 🤔
Do you see the brown, speckled egg in this nest? It likely came from a Brown-headed Cowbird! Cowbirds are brood parasites, meaning they lay their eggs in nests of other bird species. Once the egg hatches, the unsuspecting parents will raise the baby Cowbird without ever knowing it`s not one of their own.

Have you ever been to the STEM Dugout at a Diamondbacks game?
Presented by @resolutioncopper, the STEM Dugout features education displays and learning activities for kids of all ages! You can find the Dugout near section 327 on Chase Field`s upper concourse.
We had the privilege of participating during yesterday`s game, and will be back Wednesday, August 26th! If you happen to be there, stop by to learn about desert plants and their pollinators. We hope to see you there!
